The earliest known name of the city is Angelacoma. It was called as Aynagöl and Ezinegöl during Ottoman Era. It is assumed that İnegöl plain submerged for long years. The name of İnegöl in the meaning of Subaşı or Gölbaşı was used for this reason.

The key findings about İnegöl date back to 3000 BC. From this aspect, the city has a history of 5000 years.

Phrygians, Lydians, Bithynia, Roman, Byzantium, Anatolian Seljuk and Ottoman civilizations left a mark in the history of İnegöl. The first fortress conquered by the Ottomans in 1285 is located in Kulaca village of İnegöl and tomb of Baykoca who is the first martyr of the dynasty is in Hamzabey Neighborhood. The conquest of İnegöl by the Ottomans was in 1299. The conqueror of İnegöl was Turgut Alp who was among commanders of Osman Gazi.

Naili Gökberk Paşa who was Chief of Staff of the 3rd Army entered the city at the head of the Turkish army during the liberation of İnegöl from enemy occupation. Independence Day of the city was September 6th, 1922.

As İnegöl is located in the vicinity of İstanbul, Bursa and Yalova; Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk visited İnegöl four times between 1922 and 1926.

The first female member of Parliament was from İnegöl district was Şekibe İnsel. She was among 17 female members of parliament to get into TGNA following the election on February 8th, 1935. The first female chairman of sports club was Vahide Hanım who was a teacher and managed İnegöl İdman Yurdu Football Club.
